Today we are formally launching Ardens — a Catholic missionary organisation serving university students across Europe. Our missionaries live and work on campus, building real friendships with students and walking with them, through Bible studies, conversation, and prayer, back to faith and the sacraments.
Ardens grew out of more than ten years of FOCUS Europe — the European arm of the Fellowship of Catholic University Students. With the encouragement of FOCUS leadership in the United States, the European team has established Ardens as a locally-governed European missionary organisation, on European soil, in partnership with the dioceses we serve.
The mission has always belonged to the local Church. As the work on European campuses has grown — across Ireland, Northern Ireland, Germany, and Austria — it has become clearer that it should be governed, funded, and resourced from within Europe itself.
“Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked to us on the road?”
Luke 24:32
Ardens, meaning 'burning,' takes its name from that moment on the road to Emmaus. It names what we hope for: a generation of European students whose hearts are set on fire by an encounter with the risen Christ — and who go on to share him with their friends.
In late June, our missionaries begin training. In September, they take up posts on campus across our four founding countries. We are launching with a small barebones site today; in the coming months we will add photography, missionary profiles, and a fuller account of our work.
If you have walked with us this far — through FOCUS Europe — thank you. The mission continues. If you are new here, we would love to introduce you to it.
